In addition to her work as an educator, Jasmine serves as active conductor and clinician. She now serves as the band director at IS 318 where 80% of the students in the band program attend performing arts high schools in New York City. The Grand Street Campus music program is made up of 400 performing arts students across three separate schools, many of whom begin their formal study of music as ninth graders. After her time at JHS 50, she served on the music faculty at the Grand Street Campus High Schools as director of the Symphonic Band and Jazz Band B. Upon relocating to New York, she became the band director at first at JHS 50 where she led the band program to several Gold medal ratings at NYSSMA majors evaluation including their first ever Gold medal rating in 2009. Her teaching career began at Olsen Middle school (Dania Beach, Florida) where under her direction, students actively participated in all county bands, all state bands, FBA solo and ensemble, and FBA music performance assessments. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Florida State University and a Master’s Degree in Music Education from Ithaca College. Nazarian and David Lai, conductor of "The Phantom of the Opera" and a former vice president of Sony Records, are both district graduates who have won Grammy Awards.ĭistrict Superintendent Joseph Corr hailed the district's staff and Keough for earning the award.Jasmine Britt is a music educator based in Brooklyn, New York. The Five Browns, a quintet of sibling pianists, also worked with the district's students when in the area for a concert. The district also brought in The New York Voices, a jazz ensemble that includes a district graduate, Kim Nazarian, to work with students. "We collaborate with dancers and with musicians from the Philadelphia Orchestra," he said. The district also works to connect its students with outside musicians, and it has worked with the Albany Symphony Orchestra and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. In fourth grade, children can choose whether to join the band, the orchestra or the chorus. With 5,400 students in the district, that means more than a third of the students are involved in some way. The district has 31 different concerts each year, with 2,100 students participating. Recordings and concert programs from the elementary, junior high and high school were also submitted. The district submitted a 75-page application on the district's music curriculum, performing groups, staff development and other information. "Our high school groups have consistently performed the highest level of music and achieved the highest scores," Keough said. NYSSMA also runs major festivals in which students come in and have their performance skills evaluated. Those groups include bands, which feature brass instruments orchestras, which feature string instruments and choruses. "They referenced the number of North Colonie students accepted into the All-State Music performing groups," said Deborah Keough, who oversees the district music program. The district received the New York State School Music Association's Presidential Citation for Excellence, only one of 20 districts in the organization's history to be so recognized.
